Insert Symbols

Insert Symbols lets you place doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, and other visual markers on your sketch. You can use built-in preset symbols or create your own custom symbols for reuse.

Opening the Symbols Tab

Symbols are managed in the Symbols tab in the right-side panel.

  1. 1. Open the Symbols panel.
    Use either of these:
    • Click the Symbols button (door icon) in the top toolbar, or
    • Switch to the Symbols tab in the right-side panel if it’s already open.
  2. 2. Review the sections.
The Symbols tab is divided into:
    • Preset Symbols – built-in symbols organized by category.
    • Custom Symbols – symbols you have created and saved.
  3. 3. Use the search box.
At the top of the tab, use the Search symbols… box to filter across both preset and custom symbols as you type.

Using Preset Symbols

Preset Symbols are organized into categories so you can quickly find doors, windows, fixtures, and more.

Choosing a Category

  1. In the Preset Symbols section, use the Category dropdown to choose a group, such as:
    • Appliances, Kitchen, Bathroom, Fixtures
    • Doors, Windows, Staircases
    • Furniture, Office, Recreation, Outdoors
    • Security, Signs, Vehicles, Arrows, and more
  2. After selecting a category, the list below fills with all symbols for that category.
  3. If the search filter hides everything, a small “No matches in this list.” message is shown.

Placing a Preset Symbol

  1. In the chosen category, locate the symbol you want to use.
  2. Click the symbol to enter symbol placement mode.
  3. Move your cursor over the sketch canvas and click where you want the symbol placed.
  4. Doors and windows snap to walls when applicable to help keep alignment clean along line segments.

Once placed, symbols behave like other objects and can be selected and adjusted using the standard tools (pointer, properties, etc.).

Custom Symbols

Custom Symbols are symbols you design yourself, such as special fixtures, unique door types, or custom icons you want to reuse across sketches.

Placing a Custom Symbol

  1. Scroll to the Custom Symbols section in the Symbols tab.
  2. Any symbols you’ve created previously appear here automatically.
  3. Click a custom symbol to enter placement mode, then click on the sketch where you want it placed.

Custom symbols are reusable. You can place the same symbol multiple times across different sketches and projects.

Creating a New Custom Symbol

  1. At the bottom of the Symbols tab, click + New Custom Symbol.
  2. A separate window opens where you design the symbol:
    • Draw the symbol shape.
    • Adjust its lines and details as needed.
  3. When finished, click Save in the symbol window and give the symbol a name.
  4. Close the symbol window. The Custom Symbols list reloads and your new symbol appears, ready to be selected and placed.

New custom symbols are tied to your account and are available anywhere the Symbols tab is used.

Editing Existing Custom Symbols

The Edit Symbols mode lets you open custom symbols for modification instead of placing them.

  1. 1. Turn on Edit mode.
In the Custom Symbols header, click Edit Symbols. An “Edit mode” hint appears, indicating that clicking a symbol will open it for editing instead of placing it.
  2. 2. Click a custom symbol to edit.
While in edit mode, click any custom symbol in the list. The symbol editor window opens with that symbol’s existing drawing.
  3. 3. Modify and save.
Adjust the symbol as needed, then click Save. When you close the editor, the custom list reloads with the updated version.
  4. 4. Exit Edit mode.
Click Cancel (next to Edit Symbols) to return to normal placement behavior.

While Edit mode is active, clicking custom symbols is for editing only. Turn off Edit mode to go back to placing symbols in the sketch.

Search & “How to use this tab”

The Symbols tab includes search and an inline help panel to remind users how it works.

Search Symbols

  • Use the Search symbols… box at the top of the tab.
  • Typing filters both Preset Symbols and Custom Symbols as you type.
  • Clear the search box to restore the full lists.

How to Use This Tab

At the bottom of the Symbols tab there is a small help section titled How to use this tab, which mirrors these key points:

  • Preset Symbols – choose a category, then click a symbol to place it. Doors and windows snap to walls when applicable.
  • Custom Symbols – your saved symbols appear automatically; click one to place it.
  • + New Custom Symbol – opens a window to create a symbol. Draw it, click Save, name it, and when you close the window the list reloads so you can select it immediately.
  • Edit symbols – toggles edit mode so clicking a custom symbol opens it for editing. Click Cancel to return to placement mode.
  • Search – filters across both Preset and Custom symbols.

This inline help is meant as a quick in-app reminder and matches the behavior described on this page.
